Greenery with llama - Lot 5
Greenery with llama
Brussels tapestry panel
16th century, circa 1560
H. 2.33 x W. 1.83 m
H. 7ft 7½ x W. 6ft
Description:
Although it is a fragment, the composition of this beautiful panel is coherent. The llama, an exotic animal, is practically in the center of the composition. In the right foreground, a bird with a long beak, perched on one leg, seems to regard the male llama with a critical eye. Its breast is similar to that of an ermine. In the background, a pair of mythical hunters can be seen: Cephalus and Procris.
Related tapestry:
This beautiful panel can be compared with another fragment of Verdure au lama in the collections of the Wavel Castle Museum in Krakow, which belonged to King Sigismund Augustus II (1520-1572).
