Verdure aux grands arbres - Lot 29
Verdure aux grands arbres
Tapestry from the Manufacture Royale de Beauvais
17th century, circa 1670
Mark: a fleur-de-lys in the lower braid, left.
H. 2.79 x W. 2.60 m
H. 9ft 2 x W. 8ft 6
Verdures with this border were delivered by Hinart (first director of the Manufacture de Beauvais from 1665 to 1683) to the Garde Meuble Royal in 1669. We can therefore date this beautiful panel to the 1670's. The border is described as follows in the inventory of the crown tapestries: "...in a yellow background border with festoons of oak leaves, roses, tulips and other flowers" See Vittet 2010, p.358. This panel is a fine example of the quality that some French verdures of the Louis XIV period could attain.
Material and condition:
Woven in wool and silk: wool warp, wool and silk weft. The tapestry is in a good state of preservation, but it is a fragment.
Provenance :
- Le Havre Enchères 13.12.2020
