ARTAUD Antonin. - Lot 16
ARTAUD Antonin.
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED to Théodore FRAENKEL. Circa 1928. 3 pages in-8 in ink on lined paper (slight stain).
Important letter addressed to Théodore Fraenkel after Artaud's break with Genica Athanasiou, who shared his life passionately from 1922 to 1927. Artaud criticizes Fraenkel for his unjust remarks and, above all, insists on the harmful role played against him by Fraenkel's wife, Bianca, with Genica.
Théodore Fraenkel, a writer and physician, was a close friend of André Breton and a member of the Dadaist and Surrealist movements. ... Recall your memories and you'll see how unfair you are. We didn't break up when you stopped giving me the services you mentioned, because I've seen you many times since then, at a lunch at Wepler's and another lunch at Genica's. I stopped seeing Genica when I was a child. I stopped seeing Genica exactly at the end of these last lunches at her home, and I couldn't help thinking that if not you, at least your wife was aware of the role she was playing in my relationship with Genica, and was exactly the screen behind which Genica was hiding to break off her relationship with me, which had been weighing on her since she had taken on a new lover.
