ARTAUD Euphrasie. - Lot 30
ARTAUD Euphrasie.
12 SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTERS, 1 SIGNED POSTCARD AND 1 SIGNED TAPUSCRITE LETTER to Doctor FERDIÈRE. 1942-1948. Some twenty pages in various formats.
Poignant correspondence from Euphrasie Artaud, Antoni's mother, who was always close to her son and concerned about his state of health. ... Monsieur Desnos has informed me of your interest in my son Antonin Artaud, currently interned at Ville Evrard, and of your intention to take him to the asylum you run in Rodez. First of all, let me thank you for helping to improve my son Antonin's health. .... I'd be very grateful if you could give me some news about my son Antonin Artaud. He hasn't written to me for a long time and I'm afraid he's ill. On the other hand, I would be so happy if you could give me your diagnosis of his mental state. In your opinion, could I have any hope of one day seeing, if not his complete recovery, at least some improvement where he could enjoy some freedom.
I'm very sorry to bother you with my son, but he doesn't want to be called Artaud anymore. He begs me in all his letters to write to him under the name Nalpas. Should I agree with him?
Ferdière replies to Euphrasie Artaud about a letter she sent him: Madame, I regret to inform you that I unfortunately do not share your optimism about Mr. Artaud's recovery, as the prognosis for his illness remains grave. We may be able to attempt a trial outing one day, but we cannot hope to completely eradicate his hallucinations and delusions. ...Very depressed by the death of my son Antonin Artaud, I have not been able to write to you as I would have liked earlier. Whatever some people may think, I know that my son's condition had improved considerably by the time he was admitted to your establishment, and I would like to express my gratitude for the care you gave him at the time. Unfortunately, having returned too quickly to a life that was no longer made for him, and having returned to an environment that was harmful to him, he could only return to his past mistakes.
