ARTAUD Antonin. AUTOGRAPHIC LETTER SIGNED to Dr. FERDIÈRE. Rodez, Circa 1943. 8 pages in-8 in ink on colored paper. Extraordinary letter from Rodez, where Artaud was interned, to Doctor Ferdière:... I have understood, dear Monsieur Ferdière, the reason for your dissatisfaction with me, but before the irremediable is accomplished, I would like to turn to your heart one last time, to find in you the friend who helped me and brought me here, and not the doctor of an administration that has been the cause of my torment for seven years... I have always wanted to draw you into my own poetic sphere, but I saw that you didn't want to believe in it, and that's what closed my heart. The poet's mystical states are not delirium, Doctor Ferdière, they are the basis of his poetry. To call me delirious is to deny the poetic value of the suffering that has been boiling inside me since the age of fifteen in the face of the wonders of the world of the spirit that real-life beings can never realize. And it is from this admirable suffering of being that I write my poems and songs. How can you not love what you love in my work, in the character I am?
