ARTAUD Antonin. TUTUGURI. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT. 4 1/2 pages in-4 in green ink on lined paper and AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED to Marc BARBEZAT. Ivry, November 7, 1947. 4 pages in-8 in green ink on lined paper, envelope retained. "Tutuguri le rite du soleil noir" is a text dedicated to the Peyote rite of the Tarahumara people. ... I open the circle of six crosses, thirteen below, as if embedded in mother earth, unencumbered by the foul embrace of the drooling mother. The black charcoal earth is the only damp spot in this rocky cleft. The rite is that the new sun passes through 7 points before bursting forth at the earth's orifice, and there are six men, one for each sun and a seventh man who is the sun itself dressed in black and red flesh. Now this seventh man is a horse, a horse with a man massaging it, but it's the horse that's the sun, not the man. To the rip of a drum and a long, strange trumpet, the six men who had been lying flat on the ground burst out one after the other like sunflowers... Marc Barbezat publishes "Le Rite du Peyotl chez les Tarahumaras" in issue 13 of his magazine l'Arbalète. He will also publish "Les Tarahumaras" in volume. Letter to Barbezat ... I greatly regret that you have decided not to publish the Peyote rite in a separate volume. I hope you will reconsider this decision, and moreover I am sending you a new manuscript ... entitled "Tuguri le Rite du soleil noir" [The manuscript described above].
