BATAILLE Georges. - Lot 54
BATAILLE Georges.
6 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED to Marie-Louise BATAILLE. Riom 1919- Orléans 1952. 22 pages in-4 and in-8 from Riom, and 5 1/2 pages in-8 from Orléans.
Intimate correspondence from Georges Bataille, then in his twenties, to his cousin Germaine Marie-Louise Bataille, who would become an art historian and publish under the pseudonyms Jean Calmes and Marie Elbé. This correspondence already reveals the future Georges Bataille and the influence of Nietzsche. ... I bang my fists on the table because I'm an idiot. First I think of a multitude of things that are as empty as drafts. Neither you nor I ever see what our lives are like, nor those of other living humans. It's a shameful comedy that we obey. We're the toys of a director, I swear we're idiots.... I swear again that I only think straight when I'm angry. Our lives are as pointless as flies. We've given nothing and we litter. How many times has there been something we've walked for that was worth putting our foot forward for. And there's nothing to explain such incoherence. You can turn: the human world is a desert for those who seek the reasons for their steps. I know I'm exaggerating like a madman, but it's something only madmen have the courage to see clearly. Is this living humanity made for the misery it creates? I won't mark time with this horde. It's true that I've had this hatred in my life, but I was cowardly enough to forget it when it was pleasant to live like the world. However, I'm not yet carious enough to let it happen to me. You'll find me wild again.
