DUBUFFET Jean. - Lot 164
DUBUFFET Jean. 3 LETTRES AUTOGRAPHES SIGNED and 5 LETTRES TAPUSCRITES SIGNED AND MISCELLANEOUS DOCUMENTS to Noël ARNAUD. Paris and Vence, 1960-1967. 8 pages in-4, 1 envelope preserved. Correspondence concerning the activities of the Compagnie de l'Art Brut. Dubuffet appeals to his dear librarian and great bibliologist, suggesting the purchase of works he would like to see in the library of the Compagnie de l'Art Brut, or asking for his help in acquiring a collection of drawings by lunatics. He also expresses his annoyance at a catalog presented in the purest style of the great Breton trumpet: I am annoyed by the devious enterprise that seems to be developing with a view to accrediting that the works of Adolf Wolfli and Joseph Crépin et Aloïse were known to André Breton and the Surrealists and celebrated by them prior to the exhibitions held at the Foyer de l'Art Brut in 1947. On André Martel and the creation of an institute of psychic stylization: ... What a wonderful idea to have entrusted the good André Martel with the direction of the studies that are being carried out. When he was my secretary, he had no memory to such a prodigious degree that when he picked up the phone to call a correspondent, he had forgotten by the time the correspondent answered what he had to say... I do believe that memory is useless, probably even harmful, for psychic stylization studies, and perhaps Martel will find all his development in this direction. Letter to Arnaud on pisseurs and photographs of works by Henri Salingardes: .... These weavers are going to embarrass you in the honorable defense of the archives because of the opprobrium attached to the figuration of the lobe. It should be pointed out, however, that this is one of the most common forms of representation in Greco-Roman art, and is frequently found in the public gardens of our cities, without anyone taking offence. On a typescript letter, Dubuffet has drawn a gidouille. Enclosed: Copy of a typed letter from Dubuffet to Docteur Henri Ey, Paris, April 3, 1963. 1 page in-4. Copy of a letter from Dubuffet to P. Raynaud. Copy of two typed letters from Noël Arnaud to Jean Dubuffet, December 18, 66, May 10, 67. 2 pages in-4. La communication aux membres de la Compagnie de l'Art Brut, three in-4 typescript pages and an important typescript file on Art Brut addressed by Noël Arnaud to Dubuffet with notes on each Art Brut painter.
