LEIRIS Michel. - Lot 220
LEIRIS Michel.
FRANCIS BACON. Afterword to the Bacon Sylvester talks. AUTOGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT of about sixty pages in blue ink on school notebook titled by Leiris. [1962-1964].
First draft manuscript with numerous autograph erasures and corrections and deleted passages. Opposite the right-hand page, the left-hand page is often filled with notes, reflections and additions. ... In language as direct and colloquial as possible, a complete survey of all facets of art and the artist are shown: technique, aesthetics, sex life, attitude to money, art as play, play as such, morality or non-morality, the place of art and the artist in the history of civilizations... the vanity factor that leads him to let a certain number of his paintings survive the adventure of their production; of an artist deeply in love with his craft while at the same time convinced of the futility of all things, and who wants to achieve, through wanderings of which he is only partially the master, the classical coherence and resemblance that a painter must obtain in our time; artistic creation and not the happiness they dispense as the touchstone of the value of civilizations.
Translated and introduced by Michel Leiris, the interviews between David Sylvester and Francis Bacon have been published by various editors.
