PAALEN Wolfgang. - Lot 252
PAALEN Wolfgang.
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED in French to Pierre MABILLE. Acapulco, March 21, 1941. 4 pages large in-4.
Beautiful letter from Surrealist painter Wolfgang Paalen from his exile in Mexico, beginning in 1939, to Pierre Mabille, a medical anthropologist close to Breton and Surrealism.
Letter relating in part to André Breton, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera... I am still anxiously awaiting news from André. Since I wrote to you I have received nothing from him. Two of my letters addressed poste restante Marseille (as he told me) came back to me as unclaimed. And it was only through Dominguez that I learned that he had finally obtained his visas for Mexico. As you probably know, Tanguy has obtained his visas for the USA. Provided they can still leave before the USA goes to war, which won't be long now... I think I've already told you that I'm not at all sure whether André will find the welcome he's hoping for here. Neither Diego nor Frida, except on the evening of our arrival in Mexico, have ever asked me about him, not even in passing on his first letters. To a very urgent letter written to Rivera in San Francisco, asking him to help me facilitate the visa issue for Breton, he did not reply (of course, this letter may have been lost). Esteban [Frances] was badly received by D [Rivera] and not at all by Frida. I'll spare you the details of why we don't see Frida at all anymore and rarely D. It seems impossible to live here for a while without realizing the obvious.
