PICASSO Pablo. - Lot 261

PICASSO Pablo. AUTOGRAPHIC POSTCARD SIGNED AND ILLUSTRATED to André LEVEL. Saint-Raphaël, August 17, 1919. In early August 1919, Picasso moved to a small hotel in Saint-Raphaël overlooking the sea. The card, entitled Souvenir de villégiature, shows a couple having a humorous conversation (two stains on the front). My dear friend Saint-Raphaël hotel continental et des bains. When will you come to see us? I'm going to work tomorrow. Superb negroes. Yours Picasso. The card is illustrated with an original drawing by Picasso of a sun and titled Midi. Before the summer of 1919, André Level and Henri Clouzot published L'Art nègre et l'Art Océanien. This work was probably sent to Picasso, giving meaning to his last sentence: "des nègres superbes" (superb negroes). It's worth recalling the importance Picasso attached to African art. Superb.
