[SARTRE]. MASSON Germaine. - Lot 287
[SARTRE]. MASSON Germaine. 12 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED to Jean-Paul SARTRE. Lyon, Le Puy en Velay, 1927-1928, some forty pages in-4 and in-8, 9 envelopes preserved. At the École normale, Sartre prepares for the agrégation in philosophy. Germaine Masson, a painter and actress, is madly in love with him; they are even engaged, but unfortunately for her it will never come to anything. ... I'd like to receive a letter from you tomorrow; I was so bored and distraught on Saturday that I didn't tell you anything about my love, but perhaps that would have been a bit pointless you were so furious I love you with all my heart... .... In your last letter you told me that if my parents go to Lyon our fate will be fixed and yet nothing is less certain than our future. My parents are opposed to marriage before military service. They say it will be miserable. I won't have much in the way of a dowry, and my father has warned me in all seriousness that if I do without their goodwill I'll have nothing at all... .... My dearest love, I will never send you the slightest caress in a letter, especially now that you have reproached me for it, it would seem to me to be a service ordered, but my tendernesses for you are many.
