Luba mask, kifwebe - Lot 29
Luba mask, kifwebe
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood
H. 40 cm
Provenance :
- Jean-Yves Coué, Nantes
- Private collection, Paris
Hemispherical mask featuring a face marked by a median ridge. On either side of this line are two half-closed coffee-bean-shaped eyes. The raised mouth responds to the bun overhanging the top of the skull.
According to Hersak (in Herreman and Petridis, 1993), round kifwebe masks represent the female counterpart to the classic oblong luba kifwebe mask, similar to that of the Songye. See Neyt (1993, p.203) for a comparable example collected before 1913 and preserved at the Seattle Art Museum (inv.81.17.869).
