The banker Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564-1637) and his brother Cardinal Benedetto (1554-1621), patrons of Caravaggio, were among the most important Roman collectors of antique sculptures, paintings and friezes. This work depicts their palace in Rome, where the collection was kept. The preparation of this fully engraved work was supervised by Joachim von Sandrart (author of L'Academia todesca della architectura), who stayed at the Palazzo Giustiniani in the 1630's. The printing date of the work - absent from the title page - is deduced from that inscribed on the portrait of Vincenzo Giustiniani (Vol. I. pl. 2). BIBLIOGRAPHY : F. Haskell and N.
