Workshop of Jacopo Bassano(1510-1592) - Lot 250
Workshop of Jacopo Bassano(1510-1592)
Allegory of Winter
Oil on canvas
84 x 115 cm.
Interesting example of a workshop replica of one of the episodes in the famous Four Seasons cycle, conceived by Bassano in the years 1574-1575, and which met with spectacular success.
This cycle represents a novelty in Italian art, combining landscape art, consideration for everyday life and allegorical significance. It is highly probable that Bassano was aware of similar works undertaken in the North by Brueghel and Hans Bol, thanks to the circulation of Hieronymus Cock's engravings. Today, the first "prototype" copy of this cycle is believed to be the one preserved in Vienna (KunstHistorisches Museum, inv. 2.869). Another copy of Winter, by the Bassano workshop, is in Madrid (Prado Museum, inv. P000031).
