△ Reliquary figure Kota-Shamaye, Gabon - Lot 16
△ Reliquary figure Kota-Shamaye, Gabon Wooden core plated with copper and brass H. 37.5 cm Gabonese reliquary figures, commonly known as Kota, have always been considered icons of the arts of the African continent, within which the virtuoso style identified by Louis Perrois as Kota-Shamaye was distinguished early on. The admirable arrangement of its extremely simplified volumes, the imposing mass of its pyramidal forehead and the superb expression of its face give this work a major place in the very limited corpus of Shamaye productions known to date. Its patina of use and its state of preservation are corollaries of the attention that has always been paid to it. The back of the piece shows a perfect finish, its imposing central braid is, as is often the case, pierced with holes designed to receive a feather headdress.
