Kachina with pointed ears - Lot 7
Kachina with pointed ears Attributed to Hopi sculptor Otto Pentewa (1886-1961) Hopi, Arizona Cottonwood root, pigments H. 7.2 cm (without base) Mid-twentieth century Provenance : - Collection Galerie Flak, Paris - Collection Léo Scheer & Nathalie Rheims, acquired from previous owners between 1999 and 2003 To the best of our knowledge, this work can be attributed to sculptor Otto Pentewa. This Hopi artist is one of the most famous Kachina sculptors of the 20th century. Although he does not sign his works, his style and poetry are immediately recognizable. The following lot is also attributed to him. Otto Pentewa was born in the Hopi village of Oraibi at the end of the 19th century. He belonged to the Katsina Clan and his Hopi name was Sikovaya, which translates as Sunflower Flower. Kachinas by this sculptor can be found in major international museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York (inventory number 1986.35.15).
