Kachina depicting a couple of clowns and their baby - Lot 19

Kachina depicting a couple of clowns and their baby Attributed to Hopi sculptor Jimmie Koots (1915-1996) Hopi, Arizona Cottonwood root, polychrome, feathers H. 11 cm (without base) 20th century Provenance : - Collection Galerie Flak, Paris - Collection Léo Scheer & Nathalie Rheims, acquired from previous owners between 1999 and 2003 As André Breton pointed out in his 1945 travel diary among the Hopi Indians, the Clowns seem ready for anything in Hopi ceremonies (see description of lot 35). The sculpture presented here shows that, apparently, they can even start a family... A perfect illustration of the comic and daring nature of Hopi master sculptor Jimmie Koots' creations, this composition features a pair of Hano clowns embracing and holding a baby clown in a bassinet between them!
