Jimmie Koots' work includes many examples of Kachinas featuring animals (sheep, cow, deer, antelope, etc.).
The touching, poetic figure shown here, with its pointed muzzle and elongated eyes, carries a basket on his back, probably to signify that he is going to distribute seeds or gifts to the Hopis who cross his path.
According to the Hopi, Kachina spirits can influence elements related to the environment and nature. As supernatural beings, they have the power to heal illnesses, promote harvests and bring rain. In addition to these functions, animal Kachina spirits ensure the abundance and renewal of herds and wild animals for the hunting season.
