This is the fourth and final Porteur de Fagots in the Léo Scheer collection.
Reproduced in Esprit Kachina (2003), Barton Wright, curator and author of reference on ancient Hopi and Zuni art, described it as follows: "This Kachina appears among both the Zuni and Hopi. It accompanies the Sio Salako among the Hopi and the Shalako among the Zuni. She is more of a lieutenant than a guardian. She carries deer antlers in each hand during the Bean Dance on the First Mesa. The vertical yellow and red marks, just behind where the ear should be, are called sweat marks. In its Zuni form, this doll is more elongated. The doll presented here therefore appears to be of Hopi origin".
This Kachina Hakto is distinguished by the combination of the purity of the mask and the complexity of its ornamentation: rare shell shoulder strap, necklace incorporating a turquoise stone, fringed boots, armbands in checked fabric, probably from a trading post purchase or exchange, rich assemblage of cut feathers, leather, fabric and wool underlining the importance of the summit bundle.
