Black-faced Kachina - Lot 49
Black-faced Kachina Hopi, Arizona Carved wood, polychrome and fabric H. 21.5 cm (without base and feathers) Circa 1950 Provenance : - Néret-Minet sale, Drouot, Paris, October 25, 2002, lot 41 - Collection Léo Scheer & Nathalie Rheims, acquired at the above sale. The absence of any distinctive symbols or signs on his face or costume makes it impossible to identify this Kachina spirit with any precision. The black face, snout and bulging eyes can be found on Ahote (Hunter) Kachinas or various ogre figures, and it is possible that this example is a purified version.
