Pomegranate or aeolipyle - Lot 247
Pomegranate or aeolipyle Terracotta Levant, 11th / 12th century H. 10 cm These small earthenware vessels, with a globular body and conical base, are sometimes referred to as éolipyles (an ancient steam bellows system that appeared in the 1st century), but could also have been used as pomegranates. This example is engraved with scale-like motifs and double lines forming gadroons. Comparable pieces with the same decoration are published in: Carboni, S. (2001), Ceramics from Islamic Lands, The Al-Sabah Collection - Kuwait National Museum, New York: Thames & Hudson, Cat. Ad.3, p. 131.
