Rare bronze element representing al-Buraq - Lot 251
Rare bronze element representing al-Buraq
Bronze or cast brass inlaid with silver
Turkey, probably Konya (Anatolian Seljuks), 12th/13th century 9.5 x 16.8 cm
This rare bronze piece depicts a fantastical figure with a haloed female head and winged lion body, intertwined with a dragon whose snake-like body is inlaid with silver. This iconography corresponds to certain representations of al-Buraq, the Prophet's celestial mount, sometimes depicted with a horse-like body, sometimes with a leonine body, depending on the context. For another object from the same period with a similar iconography, see a Konya tile in the Metropolitan Museum (inv. n°1976.245).
