Three Ottoman tulip-neck candlesticks - Lot 264
Three Ottoman tulip-neck candlesticks Cast brass Turkey, 16th/17th century H. 31 cm / 28.5 cm / 26 cm (accidents and restorations) These three Ottoman candlesticks feature flared bases, the upper part of which has a concave drip tray. The faceted, pear-shaped, ringed shafts are topped with flared, tulip-shaped necks. One features engraved and inlaid "three-metal" decoration in the Mamluk style, probably added later in Egypt. The decoration consists of medallions, calligraphic friezes and floral motifs. A tulip-neck candlestick is in the British Museum (inv. n°1993,0728.1). For candlesticks of similar shape, including one dated 1576 (984 H.), see : Petsopoulos Y. (dir.), 1982, L'art décoratif ottoman: Tulipes, arabesques et turbans, London and Paris: Alexandria Press / Denoël, n°40 and 41.
