Zoomorphic wall bracket - Lot 271
Zoomorphic wall bracket
Gold-damascened steel
India, 17th/18th century
L. 17 cm
This beautiful zoomorphic wall bracket takes the form of an open-mouthed sea animal, and features fine gold damascened decoration. The tradition of architectural elements with zoomorphic endings was very much in vogue in South Asia in the 17th and 18th centuries. More often than not, these iron hooks do not feature damascened decoration, as is the case here. We also note the presence of engraved scales on the animal's body. Although there are no documents to confirm it, this object would have been part of Stuart Cary Welch's collection.
