Ecclesiastical scepter element - Lot 272
Ecclesiastical scepter element
Carved ivory
Turkey, probably Istanbul, 17th century
L. 16 cm - Weight : 102.3g
This carved element constituted the upper end of a scepter, with the staff placed in the center, as indicated by the hollow still visible in the middle of the object. Made of carved ivory, it depicts two dragons facing each other, their eyes wide open and their teeth showing. Their undulating bodies, carved with a vegetal motif evoking wings, form a double-volute. A similar ivory scepter pommel appears in the exhibition catalog Aspects of Armenian art, The Kalfayan Collection, June 11 - October 10, 2010, p.147, no. 96.
