Rare perfume burner - Lot 305
Rare perfume burner Glazed earthenware Turkey, Istanbul, late 19th century Total height 30 cm, in five parts (Small chips on the neck) Composed of five parts joined together by terracotta screw threads, this black glazed terracotta perfume burner features an openwork, raised decoration of successive registers of foliage, palmettes and pearls. The foot is marked with a maker's stamp. Black pieces with similar decoration to this one are attributed to Tophane production, although they are rare there. A comparable object with very similar decoration and forem in black tophane, described as a sorbet cup, is published in: Prof. DR. E. Bakla (2007), Tophane Lüleciligi: Osmanli'nin tasarimdaki yaraticiligi ve yasam keyfi (Tophane: Ottoman creativity in design and joie de vivre), Antik A.S. Yayinlari, n°P34-1, p. 269. Comparable pieces are also associated with the Asyut workshops in Egypt, such as a red incense burner in the Weltmuseum, Vienna (inv. n°47794) and a footed bowl in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. n°113A/1&2-1885).
