Rare ewer from Çanakkale - Lot 306
Rare ewer from Çanakkale Green glazed earthenware Turkey, Çanakkale, 19th century H. 36 cm This exceptional ewer is a unique example of the Çanakkale glazed ceramics from the city of the same name. We know of zoomorphic ewers, animal figures and other shaped pieces produced in large numbers by this factory. This large ewer is decorated with beams, a soldier in high relief holding a rifle and wearing a fez in the center, surrounded by three cannons. The body features openwork medallions in relief. This atypical piece was probably commissioned for a soldier. It bears a cartouche on the back giving the craftsman's name "Ismâ'il". For another ewer with comparable atypical decoration, see : Arseven C.E. (circa 1950), Les arts décoratifs Turcs, Istanbul, Milli Egitim Basimevi, p. 168, fig. 229.
