Mamelouk-style enameled glass bottle vase - Lot 352
Mamelouk-style enameled glass bottle vase Polychrome and gold-enameled glass Lobmeyr, Vienna, circa 1880 Total height 31.3 cm Provenance : - Former princely Ottoman collection This beautiful Mamluk-style enamelled glass decanter with lid is typical of Orientalist glassware, paying homage to the quality of medieval Islamic glasswork from the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras, which fascinated European glassmakers, and of which many examples are known. The calligraphic cartouches on the object bear the words Muhammad and ya hafiz "O protector". According to family history, this decanter was the personal decanter of Sultan Abdul Hamid, placed on his night table in his apartments. It bears the mark of the Lobmeyr factory in Vienna, founded in 1823 and still in business today.
