Gauri Ragini - Lot 357
Gauri Ragini Polychrome and gold on paper North India, circa 1800 Sight page: 27 x 20.5 cm - Painting: 20 x 15.2 cm Provenance : - Former private collection - Exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-arts in 1976/1977 This raga corresponds to a female raga called a ragini, part of a ragamala or "bouquet of ragas". The ragas help define a state of mind or mood through music, images and stories. All these things correspond to a time of day, a story, music and a season. Here, for example, Gauri ragini corresponds to a raga at the end of an autumn day, and to which corresponds a rather contemplative mood. On the back, an old label from the Société des Expositions du Palais des Beaux-arts A.S.B.L confirms that it was exhibited in the 1970s. Another painting by Gauri Ragini from the Edwin Binney III collection is in the collection of the San Diego Museum of Art (Acc. n°1990.799).
