Amusing Vizagapatam box with aviation scenes Exotic wood, ivory India, Vizagapatam, before 1914 9.2 x 25.7 x 21 cm - Weight : 956.3g This rectangular box is made of exotic wood covered with a fine openwork ivory mesh fastened with silver nails. Shades of a moiré material, probably tortoiseshell, can be seen through the plates behind the ivory mesh. The box rests on four clawed ivory feet. Thirteen ivory medallions on the fronts and the cutaway lid are painted with various aerial scenes (airplanes, paratroopers, bomb drops) in green, red and orange. These colors echo the red friezes that frame the different sides of the box, and the floral frieze that frames the central medallion on the lid. The box closes with a central lock. The interior, lined with blue velvet, and the mirror attached to the back of the lid indicate that this was probably a jewelry box. CITES certificate issued on 17/11/2023
