It depicts a richly dressed elephant carrying on its back two dignitaries in a howdah (palanquin). A complete Indian chess set, in ivory, whose pieces represent similar elephants, is published in Topsfield A. (2006), The Art of Play, board and card games of India, Marg publications, p.32.
