Steel, green nephrite jade
Ottoman Empire, 16th/17th century for the blade, 19th century mounts, the scabbard bears the date 1237 AH / 1821 AD Total length with scabbard 41.4 cm
This beautiful dagger takes on some of the characteristics of very early Ottoman weapons. The straight, double-edged blade is in fine damascus, with 3 central gutters. The hilt, with quillons forming volutes, features fine Baroque-inspired engraving. The scabbard, covered with leather stamped in imitation shagreen, is mounted in silver en suite and features floral decoration framed by engraved friezes an Arabic inscription "mashā al-llāh" on the chape. The bouterolle is finished with a flattened pearl.
