Large tree of life embroidery Silk embroidery, lined with silk Turkey, 19th century 225 x 168 cm This beautiful purple-backed textile is embroidered with a large tree, evoking the tree of life in the Garden of Paradise, around which a snake and a ribbon are wrapped. Along the branches appear numerous yellow, blue and white flowers. All around, a frieze consisting of a long, undulating scroll is strewn with flowers and ribbons. Family tradition has it that this textile came from the Ottoman royal family. Its quality is far superior to the average textile of the period, suggesting a princely provenance.
