Horse head Khanjar Tinted ivory, steel North India, 18th century, Mughal period H. 34.6 cm Weight : 195,6g This khanjar features a red-tinted ivory handle. The animal's halter, reins, hair and eyes are delicately engraved. Its mouth reveals its teeth. Horse-shaped handles can be found on many khanjars from the Mughal period, in different materials such as serpentine, jade, ivory or steel. This trend began in the early 17th century at the heart of the ruling classes, and was subsequently democratized. For examples in these various materials, see : Hales, R.
