Qibleh composite textile with floral design - Lot 431
Qibleh composite textile with floral design
Cotton, silk, linen, metallic threads
Ottoman world, fragments of 18th/19th-century textiles reassembled in the 19th century
72 x 132 cm (without bangs)
Textile fragments with floral motifs embroidered with metallic threads decorate the central part of this piece, framed by multiple floral and geometric friezes in predominantly red, bordered by long bangs. Qibleh panels were often designed to resemble the ceramics on mosque walls. Many of them were made by merchants and mostly assembled in the late 19th century. For comparable panels, see R. Taylor (1993), Ottoman embroidery, Wesel, Uta Hüsley.
