Black polished stone "naviform" axe-hammer head. - Lot 4
Black polished stone "naviform" axe-hammer head. Estonia or Finland, Neolithic, (2700-2400 B.C.) H. 18 cm - L. 6 cm Polished black stone axe-hammer head, "boat-shaped" type. Estonia or Finland, Neolithic (2700-2400 BC). H. 7 1/16 in - L. 2 3/8 in 1180 CH Shuttle-shaped with hole for handle and socket. Engraved line on the side and hammer with carved protuberance on the back. These hammer-axes bear witness to a population originating from the northern Black Sea that gradually migrated from Estonia through Scandinavia to Denmark. Sometimes referred to as the "war-axe culture", this farming people along the Baltic coast produced polished stone axes known as "naviforms", probably for ceremonial purposes, whose handle piercing and ornamental features such as raised ribs and protuberances on the hammer seem to have been inspired by the first copper axes beginning to circulate in Europe.
