Sfondagiaco type dagger with wheels - Lot 39
Sfondagiaco type dagger with wheels Northern Italy, c. 1500 L. 42.5 cm - W. 4.5 cm Rondel dagger of the sfondagiaco type Northern Italy, circa 1500. L. 16 3/4 in - l. 1 3/4 in 820 CH Provenance: - Luigi Marzoli Collection (1883-1969), Palazzolo sul'Oglio, Brescia (Italy) Octagonal hilt made of two horn plates enclosing a gilded bronze part engraved with vegetal scrolls. Horn spindle with iron nails imitating a gnarled branch. Circular horn pommel adorned with a gilded bronze band engraved with vegetal scrolls, the top carved in the shape of a fluted mushroom surmounted by a flower-shaped gilded iron knob. Single-edged blade with strong gutter on the back in the first third, then double-edged, followed by a diamond-shaped estoc point. The heel is adorned with a gilded, acid-etched plant motif. The back gutter is also gilded. Retains its brass pastille from the Luigi Marzoli Collection sale, no. 96. This top-quality dagger belongs to a small, very rare group of luxury Italian roulette daggers produced in northern Italy around 1500, always with slightly different mounts and blades, of which only a handful are known to exist in a few public collections (e.g., Victoria and Albert museum (2231-1855), Bargello museum (114a R), Kunsthistorisches museum (114a R)). Kunsthistorisches museum (Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer A 48)). Italian sfondagiachi-type daggers had a robust blade that could pierce chainmail and cut through gaps in armor. Known luxury sfondagiachi of this period, however, most often have "lugged" handles, inspired by Spanish daggers. The "rouelle" type, as shown here, is the latest avatar of a dagger shape that was very popular in Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries, and seems to have been rarer, hence the small number of examples preserved today. Good condition, slight wear to gilded parts. Translation at the end of the catalog
