Rondache - Lot 51
Rondache Venice (Italy), c. 1580 D. 61 cm Round shield Venice (Italy), c. 1580 D. 24 in 304 CH Provenance : - Grimani-Marcello-Sorlini castle armory in Montegalda, Vicenza - Franco Semenzato sale, Rome, May 15, 1976, lots 58-66 - Marcello Terenzi Collection, Rome - Czerny's sale, Sarzana (Italy), May 28, 2005, lot 196 Wooden rondache covered on the front with black velvet and a network of black and gold braids, held in place by brass nails, forming an eight-pointed star. The center is occupied by a large, convex umbo in the shape of a ribbed flower, held in place by a long, square-section tip and an iron washer, also in the shape of a flower. The umbo is adorned with acid-etched decoration, alternating medallions with male and female profiles, and figures of children pushing aside foliage. The whole was originally entirely gilded. The reverse of the rondache is covered in dark leather with studded geometric decoration, with a wide horizontal rectangle to which the arm cushion was attached. The handles are missing. Many similar rondaches, used for parties and ceremonies, are preserved in the arsenal of the Palazzo Ducale in Venice. Average condition, wear to the gilding on the umbo, velvet discolored and damaged in places, lacunar braids, slightly worm-eaten wood, wobbly umbo attachment, leather on the reverse quite damaged.
