Large adjustable bridle bit in tin-plated iron - Lot 61
Large adjustable bridle bit in tin-plated iron Germany, early 17th century H. 45 cm- L. 22 cm Large Adjustable Iron curb Bit Germany, early 17th century H. 4 1/8 in - L. 8 3/4 in 561 CH Mouthpiece with ribbed melons and donkey step fitted with an openwork trebuchet bearing a five-pendant salivary. The bent branches end in large triangular gargoyles with fleurons bearing the rein rings, chased and pierced all along with geometric motifs of Gothic influence and linked by a spacer chain. Each is made up of two sliding parts, held to the reverse by screws, which enable them to be lengthened as required, in order to modify their leverage. The two large pointed combs, also openworked, can also be opened to change the mouthpiece. All this made it possible to adapt the bit to several horses, but weakened the structure, reserving such pieces for leisure or ceremonial use. Large embossed iron bosses, chiselled with geometric motifs, gilded and inlaid with silver. If they are contemporary with the bit, the unconventional way they are attached to the reverse indicates a later association. Large chain bracelet hanging from one of the suspension eyes. Tinning and gilding of bosses worn in places, lower spacer chain missing, curb chain hook missing on dexter side.
