The main scene is inspired by Raphael's famous composition, widely disseminated by Marcantonio Raimondi's print, but the artist has recomposed the space and moved the characters. Pâris, who is holding out the golden apple to Venus, and whose position varies somewhat from that of his model, is now in the center, displacing Minerva from her back to the left. The ornamental frame, featuring a pair of terms with twisted bases and children clinging to garlands of fruit, is taken from the border of the Marcus Curtius print engraved by Bellifont artist Jean Mignon. The gunsmith has added a lion's head at the top and a horned chimera's head at the bottom, also inspired by the French ornamental repertoire. The rather strong, high-quality repoussé, now polished to a white finish, was originally entirely covered with gold and silver damascene, which has now completely disappeared. Two sets of four ribbed-head iron rivets held handles to the reverse, but these are later additions. This piece is to be compared with a set of rondaches and bourguignottes produced in the 1560s by the same Milanese workshop, whose maker is known only by his initials, MP, inscribed on one of his works in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The master MP, perhaps the gunsmith Matteo Piatti, produced another rondache on the theme of the Judgment of Paris, more faithfully following Raphael's composition and retaining its associated bourguignotte, now on display at the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin (inv. W 1005). General surface formerly corroded, worn by repolishing, metal pierced in several places, minor accidents.
