Pair of iron knurled spurs. - Lot 75
Pair of iron knurled spurs. France, mid-16th century L. 12 cm - W. 9.5 cm Pair of Iron Rowel Spurs France, mid-16th century L. 4 ¾ in - l. 3 ¾ in 540 CH Provenance: - Mr & Mrs Amory S. Carhart Collection, Tuxedo Park, N.Y. - Parke-Bernet Galleries sale, New York, February 18, 1942, lot 135 U-shaped branches, wider at the heel. Double rings at the ends for the lanyard hooks (three hooks on the left, two hooks and fragment of the loop on the right). Short pear-shaped stems holding eight-pointed star-shaped knurls. Gold damascened decoration on a blackened background, featuring arabesque bands adorned with vegetal scrolls. Italian-style Moorish motifs decorate the stems and fleurs-de-lis appear on the tips. The inner face of the branches features a delicate motif of large antique-style foliage scrolls. Inventory metal tag (n°18) The decoration on this pair of spurs is in keeping with the ornamentation fashionable during the reign of Henri II. Very few French luxury equestrian objects have survived from this period. The delicacy of the damascening and the motifs reveal a curial, even royal provenance. Some gaps in the damascening.
