Cuirassier's armlet - Lot 81
Cuirassier's armlet Germany (Nuremberg), c. 1630 H 35 cm - W 30cm Close helmet for a cuirassier Germany (Nuremberg), c. 1630 H. 13 ¾ in - W. 11 ¾ in 174 CH Provenance: - Christie's and Manson & Woods Ltd, London, February 20, 1991, lot 63 Iron cuirassier armlet, consisting of a crested stamp, chin strap, two-part mezail formed by a browband pierced by two slits for sight and a ventail, extended by a two-bladed gorgerin at the front and rear. The scalloped upper edge of the browband is adorned with openwork trefoils at the tips, motifs also found on either side of the pierced chin strap and ventail, where they are accompanied by hearts placed in a circle around a decorative rivet. Fine fillets and engraved corded motifs highlight the edges of the blades and the edges of the piece. Iron rivets, once used to fasten the inner lining (of which some leathers have been preserved), or for decorative purposes, have heads covered with brass leaf. Brass hooks secure the chinstrap and mezail fastenings, and a plumail holder of the same metal is attached to the rear at the base of the crest. On the dexter side, a spring-loaded button secures the closure of the browband with the ventail. On either side of the rivet circle on the front of the gorgerin, we can see the control mark of the city of Nuremberg (city coat of arms) and the gunsmith's mark (six-pointed star). Later, a strong iron ring was attached to the back of the gorgerin, perhaps to secure the object with a chain as part of a funerary or votive installation. Good overall condition, with a few accidents and traces of corrosion.
