Cavalry armlet - Lot 83
Cavalry armlet France, early 17th century H. 30 cm - L. 21 cm Cavalry close helmet France, early 17th century H. 11 3/4 in - L. 4 3/4 in 340 CHE Cavalry helmet, with ovoid fluted stamp extended by a nape blade, topped by a pointed crest pierced with several holes for a crest, with the top ornament missing. Remains of a brass penholder at the rear. Chinstrap originally held to the stamp on the sides by hinged fasteners, broken and replaced by a hook on one side. Fixed gorgerin plate at front. Two-part mezail with a very pronounced point, the ventail pierced with breathing holes arranged in a circle on both sides. Brass-headed rivets for attachment and trim. Very fine acid-etched decoration composed of alternating bands of arms trophies on a stippled background and vegetal scrolls on a hatched background. The surface of the iron was originally entirely gilded, and the trophy bands alternated a red-painted background with a black-painted one, creating a highly colorful ensemble, particularly fashionable on French armors of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Such polychrome armor, for example, is preserved at the Musée de l'Armée in Paris (inv. 457 PO). Good condition, very worn gilding and polychromy, a few accidents.
