The crest and edges are reinforced with bands of gilded copper, complemented by openwork appliques riveted to the top and back of the stamp, featuring stylized plant scrolls. This is a late example of the "celate da pompa alla veneziana", worn as early as the 15th century for the festivals and ceremonies of the Venetian Republic. In fact, it's based on an Italian salad model from the late Middle Ages. The number painted in red on the inside of the helmet (L.1876.2) corresponds to a loan made to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1919 by Bashford Dean (1867- 1928). After his death, the salad was returned to Mrs. Dean in 1929, then included in the auction sale "Collection constituted by the late Bashford Dean, now belonging to the estate of the late Mrs. Bashford Dean and sold by order of the executors." (Parke-Bernet, New York, October 26, 1950, lot 58). Good condition, discoloration and accidents on the textile, gaps in the gilding.
