L. 95 cm - W. 11.5 cm Cicilian sword Hilt by Gottfried Leygebe (Nuremberg or Berlin), blade signed Tomas Ayala (Toledo, Spain, or German imitation), circa 1650-80. L. 37 3/8 in - 4 1/2 in 796 CH Civil sword with iron frame carved by Gottfried Leygebe. Quillon in the shape of a small dog licking its paws. The central part of the guard is formed by the body of a lion standing on a cornucopia. At the crosspiece, quillon and branch emerge from the mouths of sea creatures, on which stands a lion in the round, acting as a donkey step. Iron filigree spindle with twisted ferrules. Pommel with another lion in the round in the same position. Gutter blade signed Tomas Ayala on both sides. A similar Leygebe mount, but without the guard, is in the Deutsches Klingenmuseum in Solingen, Germany. The artist also used the same lion on the pommel of a sword in the collections of the Walters Arts Museum in Baltimore (51.1387). Good condition, blade a little pitted by oxidation. Gottfried Leygebe(1630-1683), was an important swordmaker who specialized in engraving and sculpting on iron. He began his career in Nuremberg, before moving to Berlin in 1667 to work for the Grand Elector of Brandenburg Friedrich Willhelm of Hohenzollern. Well-known for his virtuoso chased-iron sword and firearm mounts, he was also a medallist and coin-maker for the Grand Elector's mint. His masterpieces include the large equestrian Saint George statuettes of King Charles II of England and the Great Elector of Brandenburg (Staatliche museen zu Berlin), each carved entirely from a single block of iron. His highly acclaimed style and compositions were also copied extensively during his lifetime by other artists of varying degrees of talent.
