Civil sword - Lot 90
Civil sword Mounting by Gottfried Leygebe (Nuremberg or Berlin), circa 1650-1680; blade dated 1686; haft second half of 18th century L. 75 cm - W. 11 cm Civilian sword Hilt by Gottfried Leygebe (Nuremberg or Berlin), circa 1650-1680; blade dated 1686; grip from the second half of the 18th century L. 29 1/2 in - l. 4 5/16 in 808 CH Carved and chased iron mount by Gottfried Leygebe, the pommel in the form of a group consisting of a unicorn fighting a kind of chimerical fawn. The same, larger group forms the donkey step, while two other unicorn forebodies complete the inverted quillons. Grotesque masks adorn the base of the iron filigree fuse from the second half of the 18th century. The original blade has also been replaced by a broad, flat blade, rounded at the tip, possibly from a shortened executioner's sword, perhaps to be used as a hunting knife or as a ceremonial or collector's weapon. The heel of one side of this blade is decorated with a fine punched decoration showing a flowering scroll with a bird, topped by the inscription "Pro Deo". The date "1686" is stamped on the other. A similar mounting can be found on a sword in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (53.216.5). Good condition, wear from use.
