Left hand dagger for taza sword - Lot 91
Left hand dagger for taza sword Milan (Italy), signed Iago, c. 1650-75. L. 37 cm - l. 28.5 cm Left-hand dagger for a taza sword. Milan (Italy), signed Iago, circa 1650-75. L. 14 1/2 in - l. 11 1/4 in 811 CH Iron frame, fully chased with high-quality openwork plant decoration. Guard with triangular hemmed shell and large straight quillons buttoned at the ends, swollen ferrule spindle and flattened spherical pommel. The frame is signed under the shell, on either side of the blade: IAGO A. S. IN MILANO (Iago, sword(?) craftsman(?) in Milan). Diamond-shaped blade with ricasso. Blade smith's mark on the gutter on the reverse of the ricasso (a cross with flowers). Pairs of weapons known as "à la taza" (named after the shape of the sword's hilt) were particularly popular in Spain, but were also often produced in Italy (notably in Naples), mainly for the Spanish market. Few examples, however, preserve such high quality chased decoration, among the best to be found for such pieces. Very good condition.
