Iron bridle bit. - Lot 100
Iron bridle bit. Mexico (Viceroyalty of New Spain), 18th century H. 30 cm - L. 12cm Iron curb bit, Mexico (Viceroyalty of New Spain), 18th century H. 11 13/16 in - L. 4 ¾ in 565 CH Large donkey step spoon mouthpiece with three copper rings to promote salivation. S-shaped branches in the form of snakes holding a fruit in their mouths, with the back bristling with an openwork crest creating a kind of lacework of geometric ornaments and tripartite leaves. The same leaves can be found on the openwork finials and branches, as well as on the large half-moon brace, to which are attached a series of pendants, the holes of which certainly accommodated other missing elements. The reins were attached to the button loops hanging from the ends of the reel chains attached to the ends of the branches. Chain curb chain hanging from the suspension eyes. This type of decoration can be found on most of the large, ceremonial equestrian items of 18th-century Mexico, such as large spurs and cross stirrups. A similarly decorated bit is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (14.25.1811).
