Large Mexican spur (left) - Lot 102
Large Mexican spur (left) Mexico (Viceroyalty of New Spain), first half of the 18th century L. 31 cm- Wheel D. 19.5 cm Large Mexican spur (left) Mexico (Viceroyalty of New Spain), first half of the 18th century L. 12 3/16 in - D. of the rowel 7 ¾ in 101 CH Entirely made of wrought iron, composed of U-shaped branches trimmed at their ends with hinged buttons for attaching lanyards. The buttons on the right take the form of the wings of a large double-headed eagle with engraved details, a Germanic imperial emblem imported into Mexican art by the Spanish, present here solely for decorative purposes. The spur's long, downward-curving stem, with its large, spirally-wound double splints, is made of a single piece, a technical tour de force of the best Mexican spur-makers of the period. It holds a large wheel whose six long points alternate with stylized floral motifs. Surface oxidation, very dirty old varnish, small lacunae on the decoration of the wheel, detached stem attachment.
